Drago Canarias has announced it will run independently in the general elections on 29 November. The party’s leader, Alberto Rodríguez, will head the candidate list for Santa Cruz de Tenerife, while Hector Morán, in charge of Organisation and Confederation, will lead the list in Las Palmas.
This decision was made during the National Secretariat meeting held in Fuerteventura, where the party resolved not to team up with any other parties for this election.
In a statement, the party expressed its belief that voting for Drago Canarias would inspire hope among the public and help curb the rise of the extreme right. They suggested that disillusioned voters, unhappy with leftist options from Madrid or those who, while claiming to be nationalists, compromise with them, would now have an alternative.
The party also criticised Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez’s decision to call early elections, originally scheduled for summer next year, labelling it “opportunistic”.
Drago Canarias has positioned itself as “the only reliable alternative” addressing key issues affecting the Canary Islands population. These include the need for reduced tourism growth, sovereignty over territorial waters, limiting speculative housing purchases, and promoting economic diversification.
The National Secretariat has confirmed Rodríguez as the top candidate for Santa Cruz de Tenerife, with Morán leading in Las Palmas. Rodríguez, a current councillor in San Cristóbal de La Laguna (Tenerife) and a former MP with Podemos, has been noted for his parliamentary experience and for being a “victim of the lawfare” agreed upon by both right and left Spanish parties.
Morán brings “extensive technical and political experience” from his time at the Congress of Deputies and the Ministry of Labour and Social Economy.
