Traffic reorganisation will begin on Monday night, 12 October, on Avenida Rafael Cabrera and around the Pérez Galdós Theatre in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. This is part of emergency repair works to the wastewater collector that were damaged by the severe weather associated with Storm Therese.
The current three-lane layout will be reduced to two between Miguel de Cervantes and Pilarillo Seco, with changes to signage and arrangements for the temporary relocation of the Municipal Buses station. Public transport routes will be adapted to accommodate the construction work, as this collector carries over 80% of the city’s daily wastewater.
The traffic modifications will take place from 12 to 17 October, from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., with changes expected to be noticeable from Tuesday, 13 October. The Municipal Buses station will operate normally until Sunday, 18 October, after which bus stops will be temporarily relocated to two sites: the right-hand side of Avenida Rafael Cabrera, between Munguía and Pilarillo Seco, and existing stops at Vegueta Market.
Under the new layout, Avenida Rafael Cabrera will have two general traffic lanes, a bus-taxi lane on the right, and a designated lane by the pavement for waiting Municipal Buses between services. Parking on the left side of the avenue will be reorganised to allow for loading zones, motorcycle parking, and spaces reserved for persons with reduced mobility and pharmacies, addressing the needs of local businesses and residents during the works.
The taxi rank on Miguel de Cervantes will move to Munguía street, between Rafael Cabrera and Avenida Marítima.
Additionally, restrictions will remain on Francisco Jareño street for turns around the Pérez Galdós Theatre, with an alternative route still in place via Avenida Rafael Cabrera, connecting to the GC-110.
EMALSA and the city council advise drivers and public transport users to pay close attention to signage during this phase and express their appreciation for the public’s understanding and cooperation amid potential disruptions.
