Lanzarote’s Socialist Youth criticised the Arrecife City Council, led by Yonathan de León, for its response to recent housing rights protests in the Ramírez Cerdá park. They condemned the threats of potential fines and evictions against demonstrators and called for a dialogue with the mayor.

José Carlos Roger said the warnings represent a repressive approach to a widespread demand for access to decent housing. He emphasised that the protesters are voicing a social emergency that needs institutional attention, which could involve fines of up to £4,500 per person.

Protesters alleged that the mayor even visited the protest site and took photographs, while local police warned that cleaners might be sent to dismantle their makeshift setup. The Socialist Youth group views this message as an indication of upcoming evictions.

Roger stated, “The mayor needs to explain these actions. Those present deserve to be heard by their council. Threatening fines for people simply asking for a decent home shows a troubling lack of political sensitivity.”

The group also rejected attempts to undermine the legitimacy of the protest participants, insisting they include families, workers, and youth peacefully expressing their needs. Roger highlighted that Lanzarote can no longer endure the critical housing situation.

He pointed out that many young people struggle to find affordable housing, which delays their independence and forces them to contemplate leaving the island for studies or opportunities. “There are workers who can’t afford rent. Families live in fear of losing their homes. Trying to discredit those who speak out reveals a serious disconnect from people’s struggles,” he added.

Despite the council’s attempts to apply municipal regulations to disperse the protest, the Socialist Youth insists on the need for political will to support peaceful demonstrations instead of escalating punitive measures.

“We urge Yonathan de León to cease threats of fines and evictions and to listen. Removing tents will not solve the housing crisis. His responsibility is to provide solutions for those seeking something as fundamental as a place to live,” concluded Roger.
