Plans for a new Burger King in La Laguna’s historic centre have hit a snag, according to the local council. The municipality has stated that the restaurant is not yet cleared to open, as the necessary paperwork remains incomplete and various permits are still pending.
The new outlet is set to occupy a historic building currently undergoing renovation, which has an active planning licence. However, the works have not been finished, and the required documentation for initial occupancy has yet to be submitted.
The council has also raised concerns over negative technical reports relating to the project, which must be addressed by the developers before the approval process can continue. Furthermore, there is no administrative permit allowing the business to commence operations, nor any valid prior communication that would enable it to open to the public.
Discrepancies have also emerged regarding the premises’ address. Promotional materials indicate the restaurant will be at number 22, while local authorities confirm that the application process pertains to number 19. The Office of Comprehensive Management of the Historic City of San Cristóbal de La Laguna has clarified that all relevant requests relate to the latter address.
Despite announcements of the restaurant’s impending opening, the council insists that any public date does not imply official approval to begin operations. Until all requirements are met, the establishment cannot open.
If approval is granted, this would mark the second burger franchise in La Laguna, following the establishment of a McDonald’s more than a year ago on Avenida Trinidad. The new Burger King is planned for a location within the highly monitored historic area of the city, where other franchises already operate.
The council intends to maintain oversight of the project’s technical, urban, and administrative aspects to ensure compliance with legal requirements. Despite promotional efforts and public anticipation, the opening still lacks municipal approval. The council reiterated that the activity is not yet licensed to commence.
Burger King has not publicly commented on the situation regarding the planned opening in La Laguna’s historic district.
