Gustavo González de Vega, the head of the PP list for Santa Cruz de Tenerife in the upcoming Congress elections, has stated that Canary Islanders looking to end the “sanchismo” government can no longer rely on CC to achieve this. His remarks followed CC’s rejection of a potential coalition with the PP and Vox.

Speaking after registering his candidacy, González expressed his pride in leading the list and pledged to approach this new role with enthusiasm and responsibility. He emphasised the need for change in the Spanish government, particularly addressing issues such as the ongoing absence of General State Budgets over the past four years and the unmet commitments of the national government to the Canaries.

Key themes in his campaign will include housing, immigration, and support for self-employed workers. Additionally, he reaffirmed the importance of protecting the Canary Islands’ Economic and Fiscal Regime (REF), stating it must be respected as a right rather than a privilege.

In support of this agenda, the PP representatives in parliament will champion the REF, claiming their experience allows them to advocate effectively for its maintenance.

José Carlos Acha, the Senate candidate for Tenerife, highlighted the honour of leading the PP alongside Inés Vera, underscoring their commitment to the island’s identity and needs. He expressed his goal of contributing to a national political transformation, backing the leadership of Alberto Núñez Feijóo.

Lope Afonso, president of the PP in Tenerife, introduced the candidates, emphasising their professional backgrounds. He noted that the candidates are tasked with presenting Tenerife’s priorities on a national stage and driving the party’s political agenda in Madrid.

Afonso also addressed the challenges faced by young people seeking independence over the past eight years of Pedro Sánchez’s government, as well as the need for fair pensions for the elderly and support for self-employed workers. He stressed that the PP’s candidacy represents hope and a commitment to necessary changes in national politics.
