The Cabildo of Fuerteventura has called on the Spanish government to release promised funding for the expansion and improvement of the La Lajita Wastewater Treatment Plant. This project, which exceeds €5 million, relies on €2.5 million in state funds.
Adargoma Hernández, the island councillor, urges the Spanish government to approve a targeted grant that would flow from the government of Spain to the Canary Islands government and then to the Cabildo. This funding is crucial for moving forward with one of the key initiatives outlined in the Fuerteventura Hydrological Plan, which aims to enhance treatment capacity to 600 cubic metres per day in the La Lajita area.
Hernández highlighted this need during the recent Water Table of the Canaries meeting, attended by representatives from the Canary Islands government and other administrations responsible for water management. The meeting focused on monitoring essential projects across different hydrographic areas.
Additionally, the importance of activating the Hydraulic Works Agreement between the regional and national governments was emphasised. This agreement is vital for promoting projects related to desalination, water reuse, and other hydraulic initiatives deemed to serve the public interest by the Canary Islands government.
