The Cabildo of Fuerteventura has approved the dismantling of the overhead power line known as ‘Gran Playa’, which runs through the Corralejo Dunes Natural Park in La Oliva. This decision follows a positive report from the Territorial Planning department, marking a significant step towards removing the power line that crosses this protected area from east to west.
As per the Natural Resources Planning (PORN) for the Corralejo Dunes, which the Cabildo is currently amending, overhead lines are explicitly prohibited in this designated natural space, part of the Natura 2000 network.
The Territorial Planning report is crucial for the removal process to advance, which will be carried out by EDISTRIBUCIÓN Redes Digitales S.L.U., the distribution company belonging to the Endesa group. The specific line connects the Geafond residential area south of Corralejo with the RIU hotels to the east of the park.
The Cabildo specified that the new energy line should use existing roads and paths rather than creating new routes, thereby minimising environmental impact. If any disturbances occur, the affected areas must be restored. Following approval, a new energy installation will need to be established before the old line can be removed, which may extend the timeline for completion.
Cabildo president Lola García and Territorial Planning councillor Nereida Calero emphasised the need for measures to protect ecosystems and land use, especially since such practices are currently banned in planning guidelines. Efforts continue to develop management plans for the natural parks of Corralejo, Jandía, Islote de Lobos, and the Rural Park of Betancuria, which are vital for defining conservation and usage in these areas.
